- When sending a letter to a current, or former service member, it can be confusing on how to address a formal salutation, or how to abbreviate the individuals rank since the services differ...
- Oftentimes, the use of the wrong abbreviation - Cpt vs. CAPT, for example - can be off-putting to the intended recipient.

Not all military personnel may be aware of the new law which allows retirees and veterans to salute the flag at ceremonial events. The below information is gleaned from the Military.com web site (also provided as a link a the bottom of this page):
* Traditionally, members of the nation's veterans service organization have rendered the hand-salute during the national anthem and at events involving the national flag ONLY while wearing the organization's official head-gear.
* The National Defense Authorization Act of 2008 contained an amendment to allow non-uniformed service members, military retirees, and veterans to render a hand salute during the hoisting, lowering, or passing of the U.S. flag.
* A later amendment further authorized hand-salutes during the national anthem by veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel. The was included in the Defense Authorization Act of 2009, signed by President George W. Bush on October 14, 2008.
* For complete wording, link to "SEC. 595. MILITARY SALUTE FOR THE FLAG DURING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM BY MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES NOT IN UNIFORM AND BY VETERANS" on the Military.com web site.

- There are 14 MOAA Chapters in North Carolina with a combined total of 18,000 members...
- BUT, there are ONLY 2,000 MOAA members who have a corresponding membership with one of the 14 NC Chapters!
- Why is this important? Here are just some of the critical actions that have been enacted or supported by MOAA:
A military member AND the member's spouse can declare a state of residency. This ensures that the spouse doesn't face problems with having to re-register to vote or to get a drivers license in each state to which the military member is assigned.
TRICARE is NOT in jeopardy of any increases as a result of recent actions by Congress in passing a health care bill because of MOAA's efforts.
A Caregiver Bill is currently being drafted by Congress to extend critical benefits to family members who support wounded warriors thanks in part to the work of MOAA.
All of these programs, and many others like them, are the direct result of MOAA's One Powerful Voice before Congress.
MOAA National NEEDS to hear from everyone about issues important to us as military members, in total, but also as they relate to our state, our hometown, AND our Chapter.
